The House took up this amendment as part of the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2024 (H.R. 4821). This amendment would block funding for new National Monument designations under the Antiquities Act. The Antiquities Act is a critical conservation law that empowers presidents to designate naturally, culturally, or historically significant federal lands or waters as national monuments. The tool has bipartisan support and has been used by 18 presidents – 9 Democrats and 9 Republicans – since its establishment. Prohibiting funding will destroy one of the most important tools we have to preserve our nation’s lands and waters. On November 2, 2023, the House rejected Rep. Ogles’ (R-TN) amendment by a vote of 175-244 (House Roll Call Number 592). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.
